Overton Named ALPB Pitcher of the Week

Two wins in series vs. Lexington topped Atlantic League hurlers

WALDORF, MD – Blue Crabs starting pitcher Connor Overton was named Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 11-16. Overton is the second Southern Maryland pitcher and the third player to earn a weekly award this season, joining relief pitcher Isaac Fix and outfielder Danny Bautista Jr.


Overton started two games last week against the division-leading Lexington Legends. He earned a pair of victories, allowing just one earned run over 10.2 innings. He allowed just six hits while striking out nine Legends hitters.


His first start of the week came on Tuesday, August 11. He cruised through 5.2 innings, holding Lexington to three runs, just one earned. In the middle of his outing, he retired nine consecutive batters between the second and fifth innings. The Blue Crabs ended up defeating the Legends 8-5.


He returned to the mound on short rest for the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, August 15. Overton was masterful, completing five scoreless innings. The Legends were only able to muster a pair of hits against the 33-year-old right-hander while he picked up four strikeouts. Overton combined with relief pitcher Jordan Carr for a 5-0 shutout win, Southern Maryland’s second shutout victory of the season.


Through 17 starts this year, Overton owns a 6-6 record with a 5.26 ERA. He ranks second in the league with 2.33 walks allowed per nine innings and a 3.96 strikeout-to-walk ratio, trailing only teammate Ian Kahaloa. He also places fourth among qualified pitchers with a 1.28 WHIP.


Overton is playing in his 12th professional season and his second with the Blue Crabs. He pitched three seasons in the Major Leagues with Toronto, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati. Prior to his MLB debut, the Mechanicsville, VA native had a stint in the Atlantic League with Lancaster in 2019. He was originally selected by Miami in the 15th round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Old Dominion University.
