Crabs Honor NFL Opener with 16-7 Win Over Revs

Darden collects four hits, four RBI and Loftin sets franchise career steals record

WALDORF, MD – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (32-27, 73-49) shrugged off two lackluster nights of offense with a 16-7 win over the York Revolution (39-20, 74-48) on Wednesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. All nine players in the Blue Crabs lineup had at least one hit in the game, led by Taylor Darden with four hits and four RBI. Jackson Loftin finished the game with three steals to become the new franchise career record holder with 101 career stolen bases with Southern Maryland. The win knocked York a half-game out of a playoff spot with four games left to play.

Both teams started the first inning by putting the first two batters of the inning on base. York stranded two runners without scoring after Blue Crabs starting pitcher Anthony Borrero worked out of the jam. York starting pitcher Rhett Kouba did not have the same kind of luck. Phillip Sikes lifted a sacrifice fly and Ethan Wilson smacked an RBI single to give Southern Maryland a 2-0 lead after one inning.

The Crabs continued to add on in the second inning. Danny Bautista Jr. drove in a pair with a two-run double and Darden followed with another RBI double to extend the Blue Crabs’ lead to 5-0.

Both teams found a two-run home run in the third inning. Jacob Teter crushed a homer to right field in the top of the inning for York before Jordan Thompson hit a 392-foot blast to left field in the bottom of the inning to put the Blue Crabs back in front by five runs at 7-2.

Also in the third inning, Loftin set the Southern Maryland franchise record with the 99th stolen base of his Blue Crabs career. He stole two more in the game to add on to his total. 

The Revolution got another two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning, this time from Devonte Brown, but the Blue Crabs responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Sikes, Stephen Paolini, and Loftin all had two RBI in the inning as the Crabs pulled out to a 14-4 lead.

York continued to creep back into the game with three runs in the fifth inning. Teter drove in two more runs with a two-run double and Shed Long Jr. hit an RBI single to trim the Southern Maryland lead to 14-7.

After a few quiet innings, Darden put Southern Maryland back on the board with a 382-foot two-run home run in the sixth inning, his 11th homer of the season, to expand the Blue Crabs’ lead to 16-7.

The Blue Crabs bullpen quieted the York offense as Donovan Burke, Adam Bogosian, Peyton Cariaco, and Garrett Ouellette combined to throw 4.2 scoreless innings to finish a 16-7 win for Southern Maryland.

The Blue Crabs finish their three-game series against the York Revolution on Thursday, September 10. First pitch is at 6:35 pm. Thursdays at Regency Furniture Stadium are Thirsty Thursdays.
