Crabs Edged 2-1 by Legends in Pitcher’s Duel

Crabs' offense silenced through seven innings in well-pitched affair

WALDORF, MD – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (17-17, 58-39) were bested by the Lexington Legends (20-15, 46-52) in a 2-1 pitcher’s duel on Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. Lexington scored their only runs of the game on a pair of solo home runs while Southern Maryland was held off the board until the eighth inning.

The contest shaped up as a pitcher’s duel early as Southern Maryland’s Greg Minier and Lexington’s Peyton Glavine each tossed three scoreless innings to start the game. The Legends broke the ice in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field by Dylan Rock to give Lexington a 1-0 lead.

Glavine finished his night after five shutout innings. He allowed just one hit and three walks with one strikeouts. He went toe-to-toe with Minier who finished six innings for the first time this season. He allowed just one run on five hits and one walk while he tied his season-high with six strikeouts.

Both teams got on the board in the eighth inning. Jerry Huntzinger padded Lexington’s lead with a solo home run to left field against Blue Crabs relief pitcher Ethan Bates. Southern Maryland scrapped to get the run back in the bottom of the inning. Phillip Sikes notched an RBI single with two outs in the inning to bring the score to 2-1 Lexington after eight innings.

The Blue Crabs could not overcome the one-run margin in the ninth inning as Lexington relief pitcher Carson Lambert navigated around a Stephen Paolini walk and stolen base in a scoreless inning to finish a 2-1 win for the Legends.

The Blue Crabs continue their six-game series against the Lexington Legends on Friday, August 14 at Regency Furniture Stadium. First pitch is at 6:35 pm.
