Crabs Crack 15 Hits in 8-5 Win Over Legends

Jordan Thompson goes 4-for-4, Blue Crabs pull a half-game behind Lexington for first place

WALDORF, MD – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (58-37, 17-15) used 15 hits and a five-run fifth inning to best the Lexington Legends (44-52, 18-15) by the final score of 8-5 on Tuesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Blue Crabs have won three consecutive games for the first time since a five-game winning streak from July 21-25 at Staten Island. Jordan Thompson paced the offense with four hits as all nine players in the Blue Crabs lineup reached base safely.

Both teams scratched a run across in the first inning. In the top of the inning, Xane Washington singled to lead off the game for Lexington and he later scored on a wild pitch by Blue Crabs starting pitcher Connor Overton. Southern Maryland responded in the bottom of the inning. Alejandro De Aza singled to lead off the inning and he later scored on a throwing error by Lexington second baseman Gabe Howell to tie the game at 1-1 after one inning.

The Blue Crabs took their first lead of the night in the bottom of the third inning. Ezequiel Pagan reached on a double and he scored on an Ethan Wilson RBI single to give Southern Maryland a 2-1 advantage.

Thompson doubled Southern Maryland’s lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. His third home run of the season carried 415 feet to left field and extended the Blue Crabs’ lead to 3-1.

The Blue Crabs broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Taylor Darden started the scoring with a solo home run to left field, his eighth homer of the year and his first since returning to the club. Phillip Sikes, Thompson, and De Aza all followed with RBI singles as the Crabs pulled out to an 8-1 lead.

Lexington took advantage of a miscue by the Blue Crabs to get back on the board in the top of the sixth inning. A two-out error by Brody Fahr allowed the inning to continue. Jackson Feltner and Patrick Sanchez used the extra opportunity to hit back-to-back RBI doubles to cut Southern Maryland’s lead to 8-3.

Overton put in his best start for Southern Maryland since returning from the injured list. Over 5.2 innings, he allowed three runs, but just one earned run. He worked around four hits, three walks, and a wild pitch. He struck out five Lexington hitters.

The Legends continued to eat into the deficit in the seventh inning. Curtis Terry tagged Blue Crabs relief pitcher Franny Cobos for a two-run home run to left center field to trim Southern Maryland’s lead to 8-5.

The Blue Crabs bullpen then locked down the three-run lead. Isaac Fix recorded the final out of the seventh inning. Ethan Hammerberg struck out the side on 10 pitches in the top of the eighth inning. Endrys Briceno then tossed a perfect ninth inning to earn his ninth save of the season and the 51st save of his ALPB career.

The Blue Crabs continue their six-game series against the Lexington Legends on Wednesday, August 12 at Regency Furniture Stadium. First pitch is at 6:35 pm.
