Crabs Bested by Legends in 7-2 Loss

WALDORF, MD – The offensive hot streak for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (17-16, 58-38) came to an end in a 7-2 loss to the Lexington Legends (18-16, 45-52) on Wednesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. Lexington starting pitcher Tyler Guilfoil was outstanding, striking out eight batters with just two runs allowed over six innings pitched. His offense backed him up with seven runs of support early in the game.

The Legends jumped on Blue Crabs starting pitcher Kyle Virbitsky as the first three batters of the game all scored. Xane Washington led off the game with a triple and he scored on a Patrick Sanchez RBI single. Curtis Terry then blasted a two-run home run to left field, his second homer in as many nights and his 20th of the season, to give Lexington a 3-0 lead.

Lexington took control of the game with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Jackson Feltner led off the inning with a solo home run to center field. Later in the inning, Xane Washington hit a two-run double and Terry added an RBI single to extend the Legends’ lead to 7-0.

Virbitsky’s tough stretch continued after he allowed seven runs over 3.2 innings of work. He surrendered nine hits, two walks, and a hit batter while he struck out three Legends hitters. Virbitsky has fallen to a 1-5 record with a 5.85 ERA over his last six starts.

The Blue Crabs finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brody Fahr walked to start the rally and Taylor Darden followed with a double off of the left field wall. Ethan Wilson brought them both home with a two-run single to trim Lexington’s lead to 7-2.

The Blue Crabs bullpen combined to toss 5.1 scoreless innings, but the Crabs bats could not mount a rally as Southern Maryland fell 7-2.

The Blue Crabs continue their six-game series against the Lexington Legends on Thursday, August 13 at Regency Furniture Stadium. First pitch is at 6:35 pm.
